EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES FOR OUR CHURCHES
LED BY REV. JOY T. MELTON, J.D.
As a part of Pfeiffer University’s continuing offering of resources to local church leaders, both clergy and lay, Rev. Joy T. Melton, author of Safe Sanctuaries for Ministers (2009) will present a full day of information on a wide variety of employment practices issues and topics important for every church to understand.
In the seminar participants will: learn key statutory provisions applicable to churches, learn key topics to include in every church’s employee/staff handbook, hear best practices for hiring and supervising staff members, and best practices for handling employee complaints. By learning these basic best practices, participants will be able to update the administration procedures in their congregations and strengthen the congregation’s ability to deliver high quality ministry. Participants will have opportunities to ask questions and collaborate with each other as well as with Rev. Melton. By the conclusion of the day, participants will have received tools that are current, cost effective, and simple to implement for the ongoing stewardship of the congregation’s ministries.
Facilitator: Rev. Joy T. Melton, is the Chief Resource Officer of the United Methodist Property and Casualty Trust, the non-profit property insurance company for United Methodist ministries. In this role, she consults with local churches, districts, and annual conferences, on a wide variety of employment issues. Melton is the author of Safe Sanctuaries Reducing the Risk of Abuse in the Church for Children and Youth (2008) and Safe Sanctuaries for Ministers (2009), available through www.UpperRoom.org. Rev. Melton is a graduate of Pfeiffer University, 1977, and a Trustee of the University. She is also a graduate of Scarritt College, 1982, and Emory University School of Law, 1993. Rev.
